Glucose unit converter and interpretation
Convert glucose units and HbA1c (% ↔ mmol/mol). Get fasting / OGTT / random / HbA1c interpretation under ADA 2024 — normal, prediabetes, diabetes ranges.
What this calculator does
Two functions in one tool:
- Unit conversion — between mg/dL and mmol/L for plasma glucose, and between % and mmol/mol for HbA1c.
- ADA 2024 interpretation — applies the diagnostic thresholds for normal / prediabetes / diabetes to a fasting glucose, 2-hour OGTT, random glucose, or HbA1c value.
You pick the test type, enter your value in either unit, and the calculator returns both unit forms plus the interpretation band with rich next-step guidance.

Glucose: 1 mmol/L = 18.0182 mg/dL HbA1c: IFCC (mmol/mol) = (NGSP % − 2.15) × 10.929
ADA 2024 diagnostic thresholds
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fasting plasma glucose | < 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) | 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L) | ≥ 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) |
| 2h OGTT (75 g) | < 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) | 140–199 mg/dL (7.8–11.0 mmol/L) | ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) |
| Random glucose + symptoms | — | — | ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) |
| HbA1c | < 5.7% (39 mmol/mol) | 5.7–6.4% (39–46 mmol/mol) | ≥ 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) |
A single abnormal value typically warrants a confirmation test on a different day. Random glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL with classic symptoms (polyuria, polydipsia, unexplained weight loss) is itself diagnostic per ADA.
Why catch glucose dysregulation early
Type 2 diabetes typically develops over years of slowly rising glucose. Most of the irreversible complications (kidney disease, retinopathy, cardiovascular events) accumulate after years of poorly controlled glucose. The earliest stages — prediabetes and the first 1–2 years of diabetes — are when intervention most preserves beta-cell function and most reduces lifetime complications.
The Diabetes Prevention Program (Knowler 2002) and the Finnish DPS showed that structured lifestyle change reduces diabetes incidence by ~58% over 3 years in people with prediabetes. Metformin in selected populations adds additional protection.
